Land Surveying
Land surveying is the profession of determining the size, shape and location of a form of tenure. Primarily this work involves
the subdivision or consolidation of land, the creation of a strata title, the delineation of a leasehold area or the definition of a resource right
such as oil, gas, minerals or timber. The land surveyor gathers evidence of adjacent or nearby property markers and assesses that evidence against
the records of the various forms of tenure in the area. From that evidence the surveyor either determines the location of a pre-defined boundary or
sets out a new boundary ensuring that it is not in conflict with an existing boundary.
The profession of land surveying is a blend of the science of measurement and the art of law. Consequently a land surveyor develops extensive skills in gathering information, considering the facts and making decisions. In the process of dealing with land tenure, most land surveyors gain considerable experience in the approval process of subdivisions and the interpretation of policies and procedures. Out on the ground the land surveyor develops skills in identifying various features such as topography.
In British Columbia there are about 325 practicing land surveyors, each of whom must be a member in good standing of the regulatory body known as the Corporation of Land Surveyors of the Province of British Columbia.
