Land surveying is the profession of determining the size, shape and location of a form of tenure. Primarily this work involves the subdivision or consolidation of land, the creation of a strata title, the delineation of a leasehold area or the definition of a resource right such as oil, gas, minerals or timber. The land surveyor gathers evidence of adjacent or nearby property markers and assesses that evidence against the records of the various forms of tenure in the area. From that evidence the surveyor either determines the location of a pre-defined boundary or sets out a new boundary ensuring that it is not in conflict with an existing boundary.
